Club Notes September 2

Senior Hurling

Our Birchgrove & Fergal Darcy (Today FM) sponsored hurlers bowed out of the senior championship last weekend as Four Roads proved too strong in many areas of the field. The final score 2-18 to 10 points means Four Roads will go on to play Athleague in the senior hurling championship.

Junior A Football Championship
The RosGal Loss Assessors Junior A Footballers got our Championship campaign back on track with a hard earned and important win over Castlerea St. Kevin’s at Ballyforan on Saturday night last.
Our youngest players paved the way for this victory with great goals by Eoin Keogh and Daniel Farrell and solid performances from Jason Cunningham and Keith Grenham, we held a five point half time lead at the break, 2-5 to 0-6.
Our defence dug deep in the second half and all played their part putting in tackles and blocks. In midfield Shane Downey and Niall Finneran won lots of primary possession as well as linking our defence and attach on many occasions.
At full time, we finished on the right side of a 2-6 to 0-11 score line.
Special credit to both Jamie and Andrew for joining us direct from Athleague after the county Hurling Semi Final and also to David, James and Jason for delaying their departure. All five played key roles in our victory.
We are scheduled to play our last group game against Elphin on this Friday night at 8pm. Venue to be confirmed at time of writing.

U16 Hurling

Our Hillview Construction sponsored U16 team started off this year’s championship Wednesday evening when they travelled to St. Dominic’s for the first round. The lads played very well on the evening and came away with good win. It’s a good start to the championship for the Pearses lads but they know there will be tougher challenges ahead. Final score Padraig Pearses 7-19, St. Dominic’s 0-08. Panel and Scorers: E. Colleran (0-2, 1F), J. Mooney, M. Glennon, J. Ryan(0-2), S. Canning(0-1), S. Costello, C. Costello(0-3), L. U15 Hurling

Our Hillview Construction sponsored U15 Team played Four Roads Monday evening in Pearses in the Galway Cup Semi-Final. This was an excellent game of hurling with both teams playing very well and taking their scores. Four Roads started the better team and led at half time on a score of 2-08 to 1-07. The Pearses lads started to get on top in the second half and led by a point with time almost up. With the very last play of the game Four Roads worked the ball up the field and found a free man on the edge of the square to score a goal. The final whistle was blown immediately so there was no time for the Pearses lads to recover. The Pearses team and supporters were very disappointed to lose but the lads can be proud of their effort. Final Score Pearses 3-11, Four Roads 4-10. Well done to Four Roads and best of luck in the final. Many thanks to the U15 management team of Cathy Glennon and Frank Canning for organising the team over the summer and well done to the team on some great wins against strong Galway clubs. Panel and scorers: S. Glennon, E. Canning, C. Carty, J. Ryan(0-2), C. Ryan(0-1, '65), S. Hogan, J. Nevin, K. Ryan(1-02, 2F), J. Flynn, C. Harley(0-1), C. Mooney(0-5), C. Grenhan, S Canning (2-0), C. Girls Under 14 Div 1A Championship Football Final

Padraig Pearses 7-3 Boyle 2-7. Our Under 14 girls completed their 3rd Championship win in as many years with a hard fought out victory against a strong Boyle side in Ballyleague on Thursday night. After the high of a huge semi-final win, the challenge for the girls was to reach this tempo again. As they have been all year the girls delivered on the big day and this is a real trademark of this team over the past 3 years. Despite their young age, they have developed a real winning mentality when they are fully focused. We were quick off the mark with a good point by Charlotte Blackweir followed by a goal from Chloe Costelloe. Boyle responded with 2 goals and we knew that we were going to have a tough evening to overcome Boyle. By the break we were two up, 3-2 to 2-3 with our further scores coming from a point from Amelia Halpin and two goals from Katie Murray. An early point from Boyle in the second half left the minimum between us. At this point the girls clicked into action and a goal and a point from Blaithnaid Kelly has us five ahead. Our defence was just superb all evening - Ella Greene was rock solid in goal and outstanding defending from the full back line of Aiveen Curley, Mia Walsh and Arlene Cunningham really frustrated the Boyle attack. Our half back line were winning a lot of ball with Emma Mc Greal holding the centre and flanked by Jennifer Downey and Lorna Cruise. Our midfield paring of Katie Mulry and Ciara Lohan ran themselves to a standstill. Up front, we were always dangerous and always likely to score when we attacked. Our wing forwards of Chloe Costelloe and Charlotte Blackweir won a huge amount of ball and set up the inside line. Amelia Halpin was a constant threat at centre half forward. Our full forward line of Blaithnaid Kelly, Ava Mulry and Katie Murray caused all sorts of problems for Boyle and were clinical throughout. Alana Ryan won good possession when introduced and was involved in setting up our two late goals. Whilst our defenders were immense during the middle to latter part of the second half, it was our forwards and midfielders who wrapped it up for us with two late goals courtesy of Amelia Halpin and Ciara Lohan. Our captain Charlotte Blackweir lifted the Cup to huge cheers from teammates and supporters alike. The bonfires on the way home and a massive welcome in Pearses was a fitting tribute a fine group of fantastic footballers. The commitment shown by the girls from February this year was just superb with a few girls hardly missing a session. With two teams in the league and Championship the 27 girls on the panel played over 30 games this year. Whilst winning is a bonus, this group of players have shown huge commitment and dedication with huge heart. They are a credit to themselves, their families and to our club. Panel as follows: Ella Greene, Charlotte Blackweir, Mia Walsh, Aiveen Curley, Arlene Cunningham, Emma Mc Greal, Ava Mulry, Katie Mulry, Ciara Lohan, Amelia Halpin, Blaithnaid Kelly, Jennifer Downey, Chloe Costelloe, Marianne Monaghan, Lorna Cruise, Katie Murray, Amy Costelloe, Hannah Farrell, Alana Ryan, Lisa Dolan, Katie Curley, Hana Kelly, Kate Moore, Laoise Costelloe, Sarah Killeen, Jessica O Brien, Clodagh Grehan, Sarah Costelloe

U12 Hurling

Our Eastern Electrical sponsored U12 team finished the group stage of the Championship this week when they played Roscommon Geals on Wednesday evening and Longford Slashers on Saturday morning in Pearses. On Wednesday evening the Pearses lads were the stronger team for much of the game but never managed to pull away from Geals due to the Geals ability to get goals. A late goal for the Geals gave them a 2 point win on a scoreline of 2-09 to 5-02. This meant Saturday's game was a must-win game for the lads and they rose to the occasion to win well and ensure their place in the cup semi-final. Date and opposition of that Semi is still to be confirmed.

Panel: J O'Byrne, G Kelly, A. Kenny, N. Doran, K Doran, D. Mooney, C. Flynn, R. Glynn, A. Hogan,A. Doran, K. Cunningham, D. Ryan, D. Kenny, S. Carty, D. Monaghan, K. Kelly, D. Lyons, J. Price, M. Brooks, D. Hogan

U10/U8 Hurling

Our U10 and U8 Hurlers travelled to Four Roads on Tuesday evening for a mini blitz against the home team. A big number of boys travelled down and acquitted themselves very well. Most importantly they all got to play a fair amount of time and enjoyed themselves immensely. Many thanks to all the parents who brought the boys down and to Four Roads for their tea and refreshments before everyone headed back home.
