Padraig Pearses U16 team completed their campaign with an unforgettable finish over Clann na Gael in Kiltoom on Saturday evening. Despite having never led throughout a pulsating final until a late free wide on the right was steered over the bar by a nerveless Jack Tumulty, Pearses deserved this win. Having dispatched the same opposition by 11 points earlier in the campaign there was always the danger of complacency entering into this final. Fortunately for the large crowd gathered this final was always in the balance and kept everyone on their toes right until the final whistle. Clann laid down a marker early and raced into an early 3 point to one lead, our point coming from the boot of Jack Tumulty. On twenty minutes we were hit with a huge blow when a Clann player reacted quickest to an incredible save from Terry McGowan and rifled the ball to the net. Clann na Gael didn't score for the remainder of the half which proved to all watching that this team was not going to let their heads drop and would fight all the way to the end. We set about repairing the damage and fired over 3 excellent points from the boots of Adam McGreal, Eoin Colleran and Luke Feehily to leave the half time score 1 - 4 to 4 points.
Starting the second half we battled hard and were rewarded with some excellent scores, two from Eoin Colleran and one from Jack Tumulty to reduce the score to one point. An incredible sideline kick from Eoin Colleran levelled the match as it entered the last ten minutes but Pearses just couldn't grab the elusive lead and a Clann point was answered by a free from Jack Tumulty wide on the right. With the clock ticking into injury time Clann again took the lead but the fighting spirit of these Pearses lads was not found wanting and from a high delivery by Adam McGreal into a packed square, somehow Luke Feehily gathered possession and fired over a barely credible point on his weaker left foot to set up a tense finale. The fiercely competitive and outstanding Luke Walsh won possession from the resultant kick out and set Jack Tumulty off on a run down the touchline only to be hauled to the ground way out on the left. The resultant free steered over the bar was the first time Pearses had led in the match and after withstanding a final push by Clann to grab an equaliser the final whistle was greeted with wild celebrations to continue Padraig Pearses excellent week.
