Club Notes March 25

On Sunday morning Woodmount played host to an U11 and U12 blitz involving Padraig Pearses, our near neighbours Clann na Gael and Loughrea, St Gabriel's and Tuam Stars from Galway. On the day we had over 150 players participate and all appeared to enjoy themselves especially given the fact that we played games against teams we wouldn't normally get the opportunity to play. A special thanks to the players and mentors of the visiting clubs for their co-operation in ensuring the games were played in a friendly and sporting manner with everyone getting plenty of game time. Thanks to Colm Greene for having the pitches so well presented (remarked on by a number of clubs). Finally a special thanks to our four referees, the experienced Rory Curley and Tony McEvilly and our newest additions Luke Galvin and James Mooney from our club U16 team. We really appreciate it.

Our minor team played St Aidans in the 2nd round of the minor league in Ballyforan on Sunday morning.  Pearses started off with a fine team move with quick hands to open the scoring with a point from Eoin Colleran. We added a 2 more before St Aidan's replied with a point from a free. We continued to play free flowing football with great scores from Thomas Carey, Jack Tumulty,  Padraig Galvin, Richie Brooks, Jack Downey and Conor Lohan. Eoin Keogh at centre forward set the tone with great passing and running with and off the ball. The second half was a very close and with James Costello pulling off a number of great saves along with some tigerish defending from Aaron Burke Conor Lohan, Luke Corbett and John Moore in the full back line limited St Aidan's attacking threats. Our half back line of Calum Keogh Eoin Mc Manus and Connell Moore attacked at all times while defending when necessary. Daniel Farrell and Jack Downey in midfield caught some great ball and provided support for both the backs and forwards with both getting on the score board. It was a great team performance. Next game is v Roscommon Gaels next weekend.

Our U 14 footballers, division 2 side played St. Aidan's down in Ballyforan on a perfect Saturday for playing football. Both sides played lovely open football, we started the 1st half well taking some good scores, and we were slightly naive in front of goal, where we should have more goals scored. Then St. Aidan's got their purple patch, hitting 3 unanswered goals. The lads focused on what had to be done at half time and to their credit they took the game back in the second half, however it was nip and tuck, with both sides taking some great scores in a high scoring game. We beat them by 4 points, 8-9 to 7-7
