Club Notes July 8

Senior Hurling Championship

Pádraig Pearses 1-14

Four Roads 1-14

Pádraig Pearses and Four Roads played out an entertaining draw in sunny Woodmount. Pádraig Pearses started the better of the two sides and lead 0.05 to 0.03 midway through the first half. Four Roads fought back with a goal for Donnacha Gately which left the game level at half time. Four Roads started the second half well and went two points ahead. Pearses full forward David Loughnane then scored a fantastic goal to bring Pearses back into the game. Both teams worked tirelessly in the energy sapping sunshine. But nothing could separate the two sides with the game finishing in a draw.

U14 Hurling - Connacht GAA Club Hurling Feile 2019 (image of NY & Pearses attached, Pearses panel are listed below)

Pearses U14 hurlers travelled to Bekan on Saturday to compete in the provincial club feile where clubs from all Connacht counties were joined by the New York and London teams.

Up first for Pearses was a unique contest against a very strong New York side. Pearses started with a great score from Shane Glennon but NY scored 3-2 without reply before half time and went on to win 3-4 to 1-1. Next up Pearses fought out a tough draw with the Mayo development squad. The final score in this one was Pearses 1-2 Mayo 0-5. The Pearses scores coming from Jack Ryan (1-1) and Keelan Ryan.

The lads then played a must-win game against Benbulben Gales from Sligo. Pearses ran out to a 5 point lead at half time thanks to points from Jack Flynn (2) Keelan Ryan (2) and Jack Ryan. This despite losing the brave Darragh O'Sullivan to injury. Pearses pulled further ahead after the break with Darragh Colleran and Shane Glennon scoring 1-1 apiece in a dangerous forward line. Final score 2-8 to 1-1.

This qualified us for the shield semi-final against a good Westport side.  Our lads got off to a great start with goals from Keelan Ryan and Shane Glennon following great work from Keelan Finneran and Luke Earls. The Mayo men pushed hard for scores but the Pearses full-back line of Hugh Curley, James Harrington and Sean Hogan were outstanding all day and goalie Dylan Ryan dealt with any balls that made their way through. Pearses stayed on top thanks to tireless work from Fionnan Seale and Jack Nevin around midfield and Padraig Lennon and Kieth Daly in the forwards. The boys ran out 3-3 to 1-2 winners to qualify for the shield final.

The final was another matchup against Mayo but tiredness and injuries to key players were taking their toll. Eoin Canning played brilliantly all day with spells in the backs and forwards. Keelan Ryan had another outstanding game scoring 1-3 along with a point from captain Jack Ryan who as always led by example. Pearses came up short in the final to a fine Mayo team. Final Score Mayo 1-7 Pearses 1-4

All in all, it was a brilliant day of hurling in Bekan. The lads did us proud.

U12 Hurling

Our Eastern Electrical Sponsored U12 Hurling Team played their final game in the group stages of the Galway league Wednesday evening when they went to Mullagh to play the group toppers Mullagh/Kiltormer. As expected Mullagh/Kiltormer were strong and lead at half time 2-04 to 0-1. However the Pearses lads played much better in the second half with goals coming from Conor Flynn and Shane Carty. Ross Glynn added 3 points and Dylan Ryan completed the Pearses scoring with a point. Overall the Pearses lads acquitted themselves very well against strong opposition and can look forward to either a Shield or Cup Semi-final depending on other results.
