U16 Championship 2020

Padraig Pearses V Tulsk Lord Edwards 3/8/20

Our u16 boys got their championship off to a good start on Monday evening in brisk conditions in woodmount. It was a hard fought contest from beginning to end and our boys showed great determination throughout. Tulsk started the game strongly with long direct ball into a potent full forward line aided with a stiff breeze. The pearses backs adjusted well to the type of ball coming in and managed to curb the attacking threat. Excellent quality tackling and great discipline were key, especially in the first half.  The backs included Keelan Ryan, Cian Grenham, Ryan Kelly, Mikey Cruise and Jack Ryan.

In midfield Conor Ryan and Conor Harley won some great possession and gave excellent quality ball to our forwards who duly assisted with some well worked scores from a variety of scorers. Adam McGreal was an excellent target man all throughout the game and he was duly assisted by Daragh Moore, Sean Canning, Cathal Carty and Abdullah Shahid. Our goalie Shane Glennon pulled off some crucial saves throughout.
All panel members made a significant contribution when introduced. These included Luke Kenny, Ben Dolan, Aaron Grenham and Jordan Downey.
Overall the players should be pleased with their performance but with more improvement required as the championship progresses.
The final score was 7-10 to 3-8.
Our second game of the C’ship was against Elphin / Ballinameen on Thursday evening in Orchard Park. Our lads were quick out of the blocks and raced into a 0-7 to 0-0 score before Elphin / Ballinameen recorded their first score. Our lads never relinquished that gap throughout the game and went on to win 4-12 to 3-7. What was most pleasing is that all the panel got significant game time and contributed to the overall performance.

U16 Girls Football: Our girls put in a tremendous performance on a wet and windy Woodmount last Tuesday evening. This was following the harsh defeat to a last minute penalty the previous week. Our backs were outstanding holding our hosts scoreless for the first half. The other end we kicked 7 points and should and could have as many goals scored. We just could not covert the many chances we had. Playing against the strong wind in the second half we conceded 2 relatively soft goals and the game was right in the balance. As always with this group of girls, they responded superbly and kicked 2 further points and sealed the win. A super performance from all 24 girls, all who got played. Next up is Eire Og this coming Tuesday at 7 in Woodmount v Dominics
