Senior Football: O’Rourke Cup v St. Brigids
Our Paul Flynn Construction sponsored Senior Footballers played the final round of the O’Rourke Cup on Sunday afternoon last against our neighbours St. Brigids at Kiltoom.
It was a tight and tense opening period, and despite scoring only a point from play we went in level four points apiece at the break. The second half was a more open and free flowing affair, and we got off to a flying start moving 1-7 to 0-4 ahead when Conor Payne got a fantastic solo goal. That score also brought all six of our forwards onto the scoresheet, a positive sign ahead of the championship getting underway next weekend. The inevitable St. Brigids fightback then followed and when Brian Stack dispatched a penalty to the net, we found ourselves four down, a ten point turnaround in as many minutes. Thankfully we finished the game stronger and had a penalty of our own scored by Hubert Darcy before he rounded off the scoring with his first from play to put us back into a lead, which we held to the 38th minute final whistle. Full time Padraig Pearses 2-9 St. Brigids 2-8.
Well done to referee Morgan Keena on making his competitive Senior refereeing debut.
We have now qualified for the O’Rourke Cup Semi Final, where we will play our other neighbours Clann na nGael. St. Faithleachs have progressed directly to the final.
This weekend however, attention turns to Championship action, where our Paul Flynn Construction Senior team play Boyle in Abbey Park, Boyle on Saturday evening at 7pm while our RosGal Loss Assessors Junior team start their campaign on Sunday at home to Roscommon Gaels @ 1pm (Time subject to change at time of going to press)
Senior Hurling Championship
Our senior hurlers played St. Dominics in the quarter-final last Saturday evening. The very wet conditions didn't make it easy for either team, with both showing great passages of play throughout the game. St. Dominic's led for most of the game, but Pearses continued to pile on the pressure which resulted in a win on a scoreline of 1-20 to 1-15. Pearses will now play Four Roads in the semi-final in three weeks. Date and time TBD.
