Our PJ Kenny Bed and Furniture Minor football team beat Tulsk in our final game of the league last Friday evening in Woodmount. In terrible conditions, both teams to their credit played open expansive football. Tulsk opened the scoring before we responded with some nice scores. Tulsk added a goal but with our backs getting on top and midfield distribution of the ball with finished the half 3 points up. Tulsk again started the 2nd half with a point. We started to win some ball around midfield and with our half-back line attacking we put over some fine points. Tulsk never gave up and kept in touch with 2 points. We created some good goal scoring chances taking 3 excellently. We finished with the final score. Pearses 3-13 Tulsk 1-09. We have won all our league games and top Division 2. We are playing the League Final next weekend. Panel: James Costello, Conor Lohan, Luke Corbett, Eoin McManus, Connell Moore, Jack Downey, Daniel Farrell, Jason Cunningham, Eoin Keogh, Thomas Carey, Eoin Colleran, Richard Browne, Pádraig Galvin, Jack Tumulty, Callum Keogh & Declan Kenny.
Our Girls U14 Div 4 football team had a comprehensive win last Wednesday evening against St Failthleachs in Ballyleague. It’s great to be able to field two teams but more importantly great to see those girls playing lovely flowing football on a wet and windy evening. Everyone played their hearts out and some of the scores were top class. We ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 5-8 to 0-2. Team as follows: Mia Walsh, Hannah Farrell, Kate Moore, Lorna Cruise, Jessica O Brien, Alana Ryan, Jennifer Downey, Marianne Monaghan, Amy Costelloe, Chloe Costelloe, Lisa Dolan.
On Sunday morning our U12 boys football team commenced their Spring League campaign when hosting Roscommon Gaels in Division 1 & Division 5 fixtures. While neither result went our way the performance of the players in the Division 5 game was particularly praiseworthy with many playing a competitive game for the first time. Indeed as the game progressed they got stronger and out scored our visitors in the 2nd half. The first game involving the Division 1 panels was an eye-opener. The Gaels are an excellent squad, very well coached and play football in the right manner. They were worthy victors. Our lads must remember this was our first competitive game of the year and as the year progresses we will improve. The most heartening feature of the day was to see 30 lads wear their club jersey over the course of the two games. As ever both matches were excellently refereed by Val Beirne.
Our Pennywell sponsored U14 hurlers prevailed over St Dominics in the Feile semi-final to qualify for the final, and also the national feile competition. The tail end of storm Hannah ensured this game was played in atrocious conditions, but both teams made the best of it to produce a fascinating, sporting contest. Playing against a gale, Pearses opened the scoring with a well worked point from Keelan Ryan. St Dominic's used the wind to their advantage and struck a goal to take the lead. But the Pearses boys struck back straight away, and fantastic interplay between Luke Earls and Eoin Canning set Charlie Mooney up for a fantastic finish to the net. St Dominic's attacked incessantly, but Pearses rearguard of James Harrington, Hugh Curley and Daragh Colleran stood up to everything they threw at them for the rest of the half, and Dylan Ryan cleared any danger from his goal. Half time came with the score Pearses 1-1 St Dominics 1-0. Playing with the wind in the second half, Pearses started to turn the screw. Industrious work from midfielders Jack Nevin and Mickey Cruise, and exceptional attacking wing back play from the omnipresent pair Fionnan Seale and Shane Glennon gave Pearses an excellent platform to attack. Jack Ryan scored a great individual goal after a mesmerising solo run, and Charlie Mooney scored a great long range point from a free to give Pearses breathing space. St Dominic's continued to press but Pearses stood up to it. Centre back Keelan Ryan dealt with a huge amount of ball and sent it back into the danger area. A long ball into the Pearses forward line was used by Jack Flynn and Keelan Finneran to create a goal chance that was poked home to give Pearses a comfortable lead. Conor Flynn, Padraig Lennon and Keith Daly were introduced to the side, worked hard and kept St Dominics guessing. Dominic's continued to press but the fresh legs of Ross Glynn and Dara O’Sullivan kept them at bay. With a late free, St Dominic's did score a goal but it was too little too late and Pearses ran out winners. Panel and scorers : Dylan Ryan, James Harrington, Daragh Colleran, Hugh Curley, Shane Glennon, Jack Ryan (1-1), Fionnan Seale, Jack Nevin, Michael Cruise, Keelan Finneran, Keelan Ryan (0-1), Jack Flynn (1-0), Charlie Mooney(1-1), Eoin Canning, Luke Earls, Keith Daly, Padraig Lennon, Dara O’Sullivan, Ross Glynn, Conor Flynn, Conor Kelly, Cillian Blackweir. Next up for the U14 Hurlers is Carnmore in the Galway Championship Monday evening and then the Feile Final against Four Roads in Athleague on Monday the 6th of May.
